BULKHEADS

Installing a bulkhead in seawater involves a rigorous process of engineering, specific material selection for harsh saltwater conditions, and heavy specialized construction. Because bulkheads act as retaining walls to prevent coastal land from sliding into the sea, they must withstand continuous lateral earth pressures, shifting tides, and corrosive marine elements.

Big Wave Construction has the experience you need to take on projects like this. We know the coastal tides along the bays, rivers, creeks, canals here in Delmarva.

DOCKS AND PIERS

Building docks and piers in a salt marsh requires navigating strict environmental regulations, utilizing specialized marine-grade materials, and employing low-impact construction methods to protect fragile coastal ecosystems. Big Wave adheres to all of this with additional care.

  • Elevated Walkways: Walkways and fixed piers are built high and narrow over marsh grass.

  • Marine-Grade Pilings: Support posts must withstand intense saltwater corrosion and marine borers.

  • Fastener Durability: All bolts, brackets, and nails should are high-grade stainless steel to prevent rapid rusting in salty air.

  • Low-Impact Driving: We use specialized machinery—sometimes working from barges or utilizing vibratory hammers and helix anchors—to set pilings securely into deep mud without unnecessarily churning up or destroying the wetland soil.

boat lifts

Building and installing a boat lift involves evaluating your shoreline, setting a strong foundation, assembling the metal frame, and installing the power mechanism to raise and lower the boat.

Big Wave Construction knows Delmarva. We know Delmarva weather. We love the beautiful Springs and Autumns. We appreciate the humid and warm summers, and the (mostly) mild winters. We understand the constant atmospheric influence from the nearby Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, which can bring our sometimes bizarre weather with crazy wind gusts that come through periodically.

That’s why we partnered with Tide Tamer Boat Lifts to bring you the best in high-performance aluminum boat lifts for coastal homeowners, marinas, and marine contractors who need equipment they can trust.

shoreline protection

Big Wave Construction has a long history of assisting the army Corps of Engineers, DNREC, state and local governments in cleaning up Coastal Delmarva’s waterways after major storms, as well as general maintenance and upkeep. We bring that experience to every project we do, whether it is commercial or residential.

Protecting your residential shoreline along the various Delmarva waterways involves evaluating site conditions, and choosing between natural "living shorelines" or traditional structural armoring. Because tidal cycles heavily impact coastal engineering, construction requires precise execution. Unlike nature-based solutions, hardened structures are designed to completely halt shoreline movement rather than adapt to it.

Our expertise lies in two main structural designs:

  • Riprap (Revetments): Sloped structures made of heavy, interlocking stones or concrete chunks placed over a geotextile fabric.

  • Bulkheads: Vertical walls built parallel to the shoreline to hold back the soil. They are usually made of vinyl, wood (pressure-treated timber), or composite sheets driven deep into the ground. They are primarily used in high-energy boat traffic zones or where deep water is needed directly at the shore (like boat slips).
